About the
ESCAMBIA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Escambia County Historical Society is dedicated to the recognition and preservation of the history and heritage of Escambia County, Alabama, and its environs, with this dedication extending to an interest in the history of our state and nation.

The Society meets at 3:15 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Thomas E. McMillan Museum at Jefferson Davis Community College. Brewton, Alabama, with the exception of November and December. No meeting is held in November, and the December meeting, held early in the month, is the annual Christmas party. Guests are welcome at all meetings.

Spearheading the drive to establish a county museum, the Society achieved this goal with the founding of the Thomas E. McMillan Memorial Museum in the Fine Arts Building at Jefferson Davis Community College. This facility is open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am until 3 pm. Other days and hours are available by appointment.

Also at Jefferson Davis Community College, the Society provides publications relating to local and state history as well as microfilmed copies of the older issues of Escambia County newspapers. These are housed, together with copies of family histories of interest to genealogists, in the "Alabama Room," also located in the Museum. One does not have to be a member of the Society to take advantage of these materials.

All materials in the
collection have
been donated to,
or purchased by,
the Society. The
collection is open
to the general
public. Materials
are to be used in-
house but may be
copied for a fee of
15 cents/page
(microfilm copies
are 25 cents/page).
There is an extensive
and growing
collection of research
materials in the form
of books, letters,
hardware company
ledgers, vertical files,
maps, microfilm,
newspapers and various
publications of other
historical societies.

The Society asks that visiting researchers register on a Society Researcher Form. Please add the name you are researching to the Family History Research File. By recording your complete name, mailing and email addresses, and phone number (or as much information as you choose), others researching the same family name will be able to contact you to share information.

Dues for individual membership in the Society are $25.00 per year, payable in January. Lifetime individual memberships are available for $250.00.
All members receive our newsletter published monthly from January through October. The 11th issue, for November-December, is published in early December. Each issue has at least two pages of expanded articles as a Journal.
Business memberships are available for $50.00 for 12 months, which includes a business-card sized advertisement in 11 issues of the newsletter.

Reprints of archived Quarterlies, Journals, or Newsletters may be purchased for $5.00 each.

You are invited to attend the meetings and become an active part of the membership of the Society. Visitors are welcome; you don't have to be a member to attend.
